Choosing a system

Electric storage vs instantaneous hot water

Understand the two system types and the questions to ask when considering a replacement.

Stored hot water

A storage system heats water and holds it in a tank for use later. Capacity, reheating arrangements and the household’s hot water use are useful topics to discuss with the installer.

Hot water as it flows

An instantaneous electric system heats water as it passes through the unit, rather than keeping a tank of hot water ready. Flow performance and electrical requirements are central to choosing a suitable model.

For example, Wilson’s manufacturer listing identifies the Super X WISX6 as a three-phase instantaneous unit. Its published flow is stated at a specific temperature rise; that condition matters when reading the specification.

Choose for your property

Ask about your available electrical supply, household needs, location and installation requirements. Avoid choosing on capacity or appearance alone.
