No hot water? What to tell your electrician

A few useful details can make the first conversation about your hot water fault easier.

Start with what has changed

Tell Lee whether the water is completely cold, cooler than usual or changing temperature unexpectedly. Mention when you first noticed it and whether the problem affects every hot tap.

Find the brand and model if you can

Look for a label on the outside of the unit, without opening any covers. A photo can help if the model number is difficult to read. Your suburb and the location of the unit are also useful.

It is okay if you cannot find the label. You can still ask for help.

Leave electrical checks to a professional

Do not remove covers, touch wiring or repeatedly reset a tripping circuit. Describe any tripping you have noticed and arrange professional help.

Talk through the next step

An assessment can establish the fault and help you decide whether a repair or replacement makes sense. Ask about the proposed work, pricing and access requirements before going ahead.
